Title : Happy to see children's happy faces reading our books

I was so impressed to see "Baabaa" which has just begun to sell in the bookstores. Baabaa who appeared suddenly in front of children is a monster with scared face and says only "baabaa". Baabaa has hair all over the body but he has a pair of corner of flower, when he feels happy the flower blooms but when he feels sad the flower shrinks.

Ooy told me that the model of Baabaa is Bomb. Tall & pure Bomb and small & cute with round eyes Ooy met at Art university and now is a couple. They started "Littleblackoz Studio" 15 years ago and are publishing picture books.

The idea of Baabaa was born in this way; one day Bomb made friend with a boy. They enjoyed together but when his mother saw Bomb, she was a bit afraid of Bomb's impression and took her boy to go back home. But the boy likes so much Bomb and he changed in good way. His mother then felt happy to see her boy's change and finally she took her boy back to Bomb's place, saying "Please keep being my son's friend". Having this story, Ooy and Bomb thought to send message as "Don't decide only with looking". Ooy and Bomb's world is a lovely stories in everyday life with gentle pictures and beautiful colors.

One day when Bomb gave sweets to a child, as soon as he receive it he ran away. After few days he came back with some sweets that he made by himself. Ooy and Bomb thoughts he ran away the other day because he did not how to express his happy feeling. This happening shows as "sharing cakes = sharing happiness". It's so nice that happiness gets spread around.

What is important for them is to have the same feeling as children. If children enjoy the book, they will love it and they will understand what Ooy and Bomb want to tell. Bomb says "When i was small I did not hear what teacher or parents say but i listened to my friends"

Ooy and Bomb believes that picture books are not a tool to express what adults want to teach but should be something that children can develop their imagination freely or their own thoughts.

Current book that Ooy and Bomb is working on is about a small restaurant at the end of a street. Very few people come to eat. But they believe that if the food is delicious then the reputation will be spread and more and more people will come to enjoy the food.

"Making picture book is not easy. It takes very long time to develop ideas. As the children read the book very carefully we have to be responsible for that and have to create the book with no mistake. But we are very happy to make the book that make children happy. Even it takes time we want to continue our work." And so Ooy and Bomb are working on a sitting table face to face in their studio.
